Three Ways of Knowing
_ I used to say that women needed two kinds of "knowing" to give birth: primordial and modern knowing. Today I believe holistic preparation for birth and parenting includes three kinds of knowing: Primordial Knowing * Modern Knowing * Knowing Thyself
During your BFW Childbirth Classes all three ways of knowing will be cultivated.
The first and most basic kind of knowing is primordial knowing: it’s what you just know in your bones or in your gut! It’s what you know before you think it through! We have been taught or conditioned not to trust or act on our gut knowing—we second guess, or check with others about what they think or what they would do if they were us.
One of your tasks of prenatal preparation is to learn to tune into gut instinct, and to distinguish this knowing from old assumptions and fears (or the contagious fear of others). Another task is to awaken the fierce protective Mother within so you can boldly act on your gut instinct. We will take up these tasks in your Birthing From Within childbirth classes.
The second kind of knowing is modern knowing: being savvy about what's happening in birth in our culture. Whether you are planning to birth at home or as naturally as possible in a hospital, holistic preparation includes learning about common, sometimes unwished-for, medical interventions such as inductions, epidurals, or cesarean birth. This information is presented in a matter-of-fact manner, with an emphasis on participating in the process of informed consent, and how to continue birthing from within even if unwished-for interventions become a necessary part of your birth.
The third kind of knowing, knowing thyself is very important. Did you know you actually make decisions more from emotions and old beliefs than from new information? As your childbirth mentor, I will provide you self-discovery questions and processes to help you separate what you believe from what you know, and to find out what is motivating you to choose or avoid certain options of birth in our culture. This work actually increases your personal freedom to choose from many more options, decreases anxiety and the possibility of experiencing emotional birth trauma.
