Traditionally people were members of a village that shared beliefs and customs surrounding birth. After birth, mothers and babies were ceremoniously welcomed into their village; support for new mothers continued for an extended period of time allowing her to heal, integrate her birth experience, and settle into her new role as mother.
Our modern society is complexly diverse. Attitudes, expectations, and "customs" in birth in our culture changes dramatically between generations, even from year to year. In our diverse culture, it is not possible to agree on "one" paradigm or philosophy of giving birth or baby care. We no longer share beliefs or customs with our parents, and often not even with our partner or peers.
So, when a mother/couple attends childbirth classes, they may be excited about learning a whole new language, perspective, and attitudes about birth and parenting. After leaving class, they want to share their enthusiasm with their village. If their enthusiasm is met with dismissal or ridicule, their tender confidence may be undermined.
In traditional societies, wise elders realized that when an individual undergoes a change in status, such as becoming a mother, because her change touches the lives of everyone in the village--the whole village had to undergo preparation. So ceremonies of preparation and of return involved the whole village, to honor everyone's change and responsibilities to support this change.
Today, we isolate the mother and father from their family and friends. We prepare them, give them new information, and send them back to an unchanged "village." And this modern method of preparation reinforces a feeling of isolation and misunderstanding.
New Parents still need their own preparation and Birthing From Within childbirth class. In addition, you can invite your family, friends, yoga teacher, midwife, doula, co-workers, neighbors...anyone and everyone who will be supporting you during the childbearing year...to this unique class and ceremony to help them prepare for their change and for supporting you in the best way possible.
VILLAGE BIRTH Class and Ceremony requires four hours. The cost is donation shared by all those who attend.
